Power Cycle Operation

PowerView™, which is covered by multiple patents, is a distributed command and control system for electric utility distribution networks. It provides a Customer Controlled Load Management and Automatic Feedback System (“CCLM/AFS”) via a high-speed data communications system. Field trials have shown that the use of PowerView™:

• Flattens the consumption curve

• Reduces overall power consumption

• Reduces cost of peak power

These benefits reduce the need to invest in “peaking power” plant facilities or acquire this very expensive power from a supplier. PowerView™ optimizes the power distribution system for a group of homes on the load side of the last distribution or secondary transformer. It has been designed to transparently apply load optimization on high power appliances (air conditioners, swimming pool motors, electric heaters, electric hot water heaters, etc.), and allow electric utilities to provide load shedding in a manner that is less intrusive (no blackouts) and more efficient than conventional load shedding approaches.

PowerView™ is comprised of a system that includes both hardware and software. The system provides a “Gateway” for every residential customer with a “Host Management System” at the electric utility control center. The initial service provided through this system is to flatten the consumption curve thus deferring or eliminating the need for the electric utility to invest in peaking power generation facilities and/ or incur the cost of procuring additional power to meet peak demand. This is accomplished by controlling the major power consumption devices in each home without affecting their quality of life, such as a “blackout” condition.

PowerView™ further allows utilities to deploy services that ultimately gives the customer choices as to how much power he will consume, when, at what price, and lets him change his mind later depending upon local conditions. This customer driven control system is designated Customer Controlled Load Management-Automatic Feedback System (CCLM/AFS). The backbone of the PowerView™ System is a high-speed data communications system that:

• Enables flattening of the consumption curve, thus deferring or eliminating the need for the electric utility to invest in peaking power plant facilities and/ or incur the cost of procuring this power.

• Provides real-time monitoring of power consumption on a home-by-home basis.

• Positions the utility to offer Energy Management services to its customers that are cost reducing, customer retaining and revenue producing.
